Whitepages.com technical SEO and large-scale search engineering
Large people-search directories behave very differently from ordinary content websites. My work with Whitepages.com focused on the technical systems that control how search engines discover, render, crawl and index very large numbers of programmatically generated URLs.
Large-scale directory SEO
I worked on the technical systems that decide how search engines discover, render, crawl and index very large numbers of programmatically generated URLs: server-side rendering, JavaScript, crawl and indexation control, canonicals, templates and internal linking at scale.
The SEO challenge
At this scale, fixing individual pages is the wrong level of abstraction. The real question is whether the publishing, rendering and discovery architecture is capable of producing crawlable, indexable, differentiated and useful search landing pages consistently.
The work required diagnosing framework and template behaviour, rather than treating Search Console errors as isolated URL problems.
What I worked on
Server-side & JavaScript rendering
Rendered HTML, client/server behaviour and Googlebot accessibility
Crawl architecture
URL discovery, crawl efficiency, sitemap strategy and low-value URL control
Indexation
Canonicalisation, duplicate URLs, index coverage and scalable diagnostics
Internal linking
Site depth, discovery pathways and distribution of internal-link equity
Template SEO
Scalable metadata, content templates and technical differentiation
Structured data
Machine-readable information applied at directory scale
Results and impact
Across the Whitepages directory properties I worked on, Search Console data showed multi-million-click organic performance over short reporting periods, alongside substantial increases in daily organic clicks.
The core lesson was simple: at directory scale, SEO becomes search engineering.
